Our Boats

The Pacific Whale Watch Association has some of the safest and most modern long-range boats plying the Sound and Straits. Unlike other whale watch destinations in the world, each one of our member operators provides a unique experience from a wide range of vessels. large and small. Whether you're looking for an exciting open Zodiac-style boat, the comfort of a larger vessel, or something in-between, or a top-of-the-line single or double sea kayak, there's a PWWA member company that’s just right for you!

PWWA boats are also some of the greenest -- most are equipped with systems that increase fuel efficiency and dramatically decrease emissions and underwater noise, hull designs that leave smaller wakes and reduce shore erosion, and four-stroke outboard engines that don't require oil burn.  Many operators are becoming "carbon-nuetral," reducing wherever we can, offsetting what we can't, doing everything possible to be part of the solution of climate change, not part of the problem.  And all of our operators support a wide range of important conservation efforts throughout the Salish Sea, contributing financially and materially to Southern Resident orca recovery, salmon restoration, clean marina programs, and to research institutions working to protect the Sound and Straits and all creatures within.  As in other sensitive marine habitats around the world, PWWA boats are also the first likely responders to an oil spill here, which according to NOAA Fisheries is the number one most immediate threat to the long-term survivability of our resident orcas.

Plus, PWWA has the most experienced and skilled captains and crew anywhere in the region, all of whom are Coast Guard-certified and emergency safety trained, every one completely dedicated to sustainable wildlife viewing. And yet providing lifelong memories to passengers, a few thrills here and there, teaching them what we know and what we love, turning them into lifelong conservationists.

Find a boat or kayak tour that works for you, have some fun, help some whales.

The Island Whaler  /  In 2004, when Captain Brett was just plain old Brett, he was plagued by a reoccurring dream of a very unusual boat. He kept dreaming and dreaming about this silly boat, and he couldn’t figure out why. He continued having this dream over the course of about nine months. Finally, at the encouragement of Terica, the next time he had the dream he found the first piece of paper he could and drew a picture of that boat. Sure enough, that was the last time he had the dream. At the time, plain old Brett was in his 10th or 11th year of building boats at Nichols Brothers Boat Builders, and thought he might be doing that for the rest of his life. But he started getting an itch to get his captain’s license. And a year or so later he did. About six months after he got his captain’s license, he took Terica on an hour and a half drive from Freeland, WA to Anacortes to get his Nextel Phone fixed. It was strange- all of the Nextel Stores in Island County & Skagit County were closed that day – EXCEPT the one in Anacortes!  On the way into the Nextel store, Captain Brett nearly drove off the road- There – in the parking lot of all places – at Island Adventures was the BOAT– from Brett’s Dream!  It had been years since he thought of that drawing. Terica told him he had to go in there and see if he could get a job – and luckily Shane Aggergaard hired Brett to run whale watching tours for him. It was his first official Captain’s job, and he was certain that was what HIS dream was all about. After the season, however, Island Adventures decided to sell that boat, and that began Deception Pass Tours. After searching for years to find the drawing, they finally did. One look and you’ll be amazed at the similarities between it and the Island Whaler.  Both are such unusual designs. Today, over 100,000 people have taken a Deception Pass Tour, and contributed to the fulfillment of one man’s dream.

The Island Explorer 3  /  At 101 feet long with an upper viewing deck and the largest bow pulpit in the industry, The Island Explorer 3 has more than enough space for everyone to have a front row spot at the rail.  Both the upper and lower deck are fully walkaround, which allows effortless movement around the boat and great viewing. Because of the new viewing distance requirements, smaller low profile vessels do not have the same great experience as our guests have on the Island Explorer 3. The lower enclosed cabin has four entrance doors making for quick access to the lower outside decks. Her size and stability enables guests to safely move around throughout the trip. The large windows in the lower heated cabin ensure that you will not miss a thing if you choose to escape from the elements into the comfy new interior, or if you step inside to grab some lunch at our snack bar counter. The Island Explorer 3 also has a 42" flat screen panel for slide shows, presentations, videos, whale identification lessons and for the GPS software that shows our day’s route. There are two on board (clean!) restrooms to add more comfort to your tour. Guests will also enjoy the yacht style booth seating inside, plenty of outside seating and over 400 feet of rail viewing space for watching whales and other wildlife. This allows Puget Sound Express to offer the first-ever half-day whale watch trip to the Seattle metropolitan area. The Chilkat features spacious, comfortable indoor seating and large windows, ADA-approved restrooms, outside viewing decks, television monitors with GPS mapping and original wildlife imagery, and a great galley/cafe -- which of course also serves up our signature, freshly baked "blueberry buckle" on every trip.  Outside, it's a menagerie of whales, porpoises, dolphins, seals, sea lions, otters, shorebirds and many other species of marine life, And since the Chilkat is a jet boat with no propellers, it's also one of the quietest vessels in the whale watch fleet.

One of the more interesting things that we have aboard is a hydrophone. This is an underwater microphone that hears the orca whales talking. Paddlers who are proficient in their own self-rescue techniques can rent single kayaks on their own. We abide by the industry safety standards of a maximum of 5 paddlers per guide ratio. All of our boat rentals are required by law to have safety equipment that is enforced by RCMP, Transport Canada and Ships Safety and are supplied for you.

Springtide FX

At SpringTide, we’re proud to maintain our fleet in top-notch condition. As a skipper for over twenty years and a fisherman for many more, Captain Dan Kukat has learned a thing or two about what makes boats tick. Between himself and his capable staff, Dan is able to manage about 90 per cent of the maintenance of the SpringTide fleet in-house. That means more reliable boats, smoother operations and fewer interruptions. (And when you’re out in the middle of the deep blue, that’s pretty comforting to know!)

Explorathor (Open Zodiac Vessel)  /  The Explorathor is the newest addition to our fleet, built in 2010 in British Columbia, Canada. It's a 47-passenger, Zodiac-style vessel, with an open seating area in the front and a semi covered seating area in the rear. The featured highlight of this vessel is the upper level observation deck which will provide passengers a superior view of the whales. Custom-designed for marine mammal viewing, the Zodiac-style hull allows for a smooth ride over the water, reducing the chances of passenger seasickness. Powered by the most fuel-efficient engines available, this water jet propelled boat is driven by turbo engines that exceed emission standard requirements. The benefit to the environment is that the vessel is extremely safe around marine mammals and has a significantly reduced environmental impact. The benefit to our passengers is a faster, quieter and smoother ride. Rain suits, hats and gloves are provided for passengers on the Explorathor.

Clipper Navigation is proud to introduce you to our fleet!  We have two high-speed catamarans used for passenger ferry service between Seattle, WA and Victoria, British Columbia and one catamaran used for Seattle/San Juan Island service and whale watching excursions.

Victoria Clipper III  /  The Victoria Clipper III is Clipper Vacations' whale and sealife search vessel.  At 114 feet long and 28.5 feet wide, it holds up to 231 passengers, the highest capacity of all Pacific Whale Watch Association vessels -- and that means more whale watchers, less boats on the water, less impacts to whales. Waterjet propulsion system, with a top speed of 25 knots. Three decks, inside seating, and outdoor viewing. Comfortable seating on the upper and lower decks. Five emergency exits and seven life rafts. Built in the USA.

The Western Prince II  /  The custom 46' Western Prince II is a fast (cruising at up to 21 knots) USCG-certified twin-engine vessel that was originally built as an ocean going charter boat.  We limit guest counts to only 32, with seating for 41.  It is large enough for safety and comfort, yet small enough for a more interactive trip with the crew, the wildlife and other guests. This is the boat that started it all. Your whale watching and wildlife tour on the Western Prince II will be comfortable regardless of weather. The main seating area, which is outside in the fresh air, has cushioned seating and may be enclosed if the weather dictates. It has a "warm up" cabin with snacks and beverages available for purchase and a full walk-around viewing deck with a spacious forward deck, a favorite with photographers. Amenities also include a galley sink and a restroom. The Western Prince II offers extraordinary comfort and safety for a vessel of her size. If you like your comfort but don't want to travel in a crowd, The Western Prince II is the whale watching vessel for you.

The Western Explorer
/  Looking for something a little more adventurous? The Western Explorer is a 27' Rigid Hull Inflatable Boat (Zodiac style), similar to the boats the Coast Guard uses for search and rescue.  It is the only USCG-certified Rigid Hull Inflatable in Washington State. The Western Explorer seats 15 guests and cruises at up to 30 knots, giving us more range than any other US whale watching boat and getting us where we need to go quickly. To ensure your comfort, every guest receives a full length Coast Guard-approved anti-exposure suit.  Of course, while the Western Explorer is a thrill, it is not a thrill ride. Every trip is guided by an experienced Captain/Naturalist with an additional Naturalist on board with more than six guests. Seeing the islands at water level gives you a unique perspective and an opportunity to really experience the local ecosystem. If you are looking for a wind in your hair "expedition style" adventure with the opportunity to learn about the amazing whales and wildlife of the San Juan Islands, then the Western Explorer is for you.

Pod Pilot / Quick Change / Orca Maru /   Wild Whales Vancouver began with two vessels. The Pod Pilot, a twin-engine jet boat that is completely open and exposed to the elements and the Quick Change II, also a jet boat, but with a covered section over the seating area and an open viewing deck at the back. A second open vessel, the Orca Maru, joined our fleet in 2010, allowing us to carry 69 passengers per day. We have selected jet boats as they are ideal for whale-watching in this area. They are able to travel quickly, allowing us to cover a large range, but more importantly, they are whale friendly!

NEAH BAY RESCUE TUG

The Barbara Foss  /  The Barbara Foss from Foss Maritime of Seattle, Washington is perhaps the most important vessel in Orca Country.

Department of Ecology has contracted with Foss Maritime Services for commercial tug services, including rescue standby and operational drills, at the western end of the Strait of Juan de Fuca and along Washington's outer coast.

The tug on station is the Barbara Foss, a 4,300 horsepower twin-screw tugboat rated for ocean service. She is 126 feet long, 35 feet wide, and has a maximum draft of 16 feet when fully loaded with fuel. It has two EMD main engines that drive two conventional propellers to create 142,600 pounds of bollard pull. The free-running speed is approximately 12.5 knots. It has fuel capacity of over 100,000 gallons of diesel, allowing extended tows.

The Barbara Foss has been specifically outfitted and the crew specially trained to support its mission as a dedicated rescue tug.

The Barbara Foss has been stationed at Neah Bay for several seasons. Foss Maritime Services has previously used the tug for a wide range of tasks, including rescue work as well as towing heavy barges and ships on many trans-ocean voyages.

NON-PROFIT BOATER EDUCATION PROGRAMS
Straitwatch and Soundwatch

is a stewardship-based marine mammal monitoring and education program operating around Vancouver Island, BC. Our program, operated by Cetus Research & Conservation Society, monitors vessel activity around marine mammals, especially killer whales, and provides boaters with interpretive talks and information on the Be Whale Wise – Marine Wildlife Viewing Guidelines. By increasing awareness of the threats these animals face, such as habitat degradation, decreased food availability, increasing underwater noise and contaminant levels, we encourage boaters to modify their behaviour to reduce their impact on these species.

We operate Straitwatch in Johnstone Strait (from Port Hardy to Campbell River), in Haro Strait and Juan De Fuca Straits off Victoria and in Clayoquot and Barkley Sound on the west coast of Vancouver Island. Our goals are:

to minimize the potential disturbance of vessel traffic on killer whales and other marine wildlife by promoting guidelines for responsible viewing; to increase public awareness of the potential consequences of inappropriate viewing behaviour and current ecological issues affecting marine wildlife locally and globally; to promote respect for and understanding of the marine environment; and, to involve communities and individuals in developing and carrying out the program.

Pacific Whale Watch Association helped launch two decades ago, and many of our captains and naturalists have done time on the Soundwatch boat over the years. We believe it remains a helpful boater education program, particularly in engaging private boaters not experienced operating vessels around whales.

Soundwatch relies heavily on community support in the form of volunteers and interns to be effective in changing boater behaviors around marine wildlife. Volunteers are an integral part of this innovative model of community based marine stewardship. Interns assist the Soundwatch program with all aspects of The Whale Museum’s Soundwatch Boater Education Program, both in the field and in the office.
